You know, when I played, I was never one of these guys who got very hyped by a coach's motivational speech. I suppose I was just too cynical for such stuff, even as a young man playing. Yet, there was something about this speech when I saw it that connected with me. I think the honestly the coach gave the team early in his remarks. I think it speaks to the essence of what it is to be a part of a team. It speaks to a constant, urgent fight and effort that must be given to beat an opponent or gain an inch. It was the type of speech I wish I would have heard one time in my playing career. If only coaches had Oliver Stone writing their material! Here it is:
